It was Summer Solstice 2017. The day was bright and sunny. I decided to take two brilliant young Philly doctors on a food adventure. I had been to TaLula’s in Asbury Park, NJ but it was their first time. If you haven’t been to Asbury Park, it’s a quaint little town down the Jersey Shore with a seemingly thriving Main Street with a slight hipster vibe. But I was on a secret, specific mission. The Beekeeper’s Lament Pizza.
Hot Calabrian soppresata, which is basically Super Pepperoni, house mozzarella and local honey. That’s it. But don’t be fooled by the simplicity. This pizza Bangs! I don’t know whether it’s the freshness of the ingredients, the perfectly fire baked crust, or that drizzle of oh so perfect honey, but this is literally the best pizza I’ve ever tasted. Now, I know what it feels like to be a fiend. The cravings for this pizza are consuming my soul. Do I need to say any more?
We also tried the Rocket, which was more complex yet still flavorful in a more subtle way. House mozzarella, ricotta, arugula, lemon, garlic, olive oil, sea salt, aleppo and aged gouda. Slightly creamy, and that hint of lemon really comes through, but the arugula really smacks you with freshness. I didn’t expect to like this, being a carnivore and all, but it was honestly delicious and went perfectly well with the Beekeeper. I found myself going back and forth between them like a kid at the candy store.
I found both pizzas went well with the homemade hot sauce sitting on every table. It’s not too spicy, so don’t worry, but it definitely adds a little somethin’ to an already delicious entrèe. All in all, TaLula’s is a fine establishment with some extremely wonderful offerings. The rest of the menu sounds just as fantastic. If you’re ever in the Asbury Park area, go.
