Grubbin Sports: Week 3 College Football Preview

Okay folks I have to start this week by admitting how trash my predictions were last week. But as they say (or at least I do) there’s always next week. But before we get to the week 3 games lets review the tape from week 2. Lamar Jackson yet again showed he’s the most athletic QB ever except for maybe Michael Vick. This week’s matchup against Clemson will tell us how much that team has progressed. Iowa State proved they still don’t know how to win yet by blowing multiple leads against Iowa and ultimately the game in OT. What a shame but I like where they are going. Oregon looked HOT out of the gates against Nebraska but struggled mightily to move the ball in the second half. If it wasn’t for Tanner Lee failing to throw it to his own guys the Huskers could have come back and taken that game. Thankfully he did though as it was the only prediction I got right this week. Deep sigh.

Baker Mayfield and the Sooners proved me wrong REAL HARD as they gave Ohio State one of those ole fashioned ass whoopins in The Shoe. JT Barrett looked abysmal and so did their defense. I won’t put a fork in them yet but Urban needs to shake some things up. So much for Stidham bringing some offense back to the Tigers. With 11 sacks and just over a 100 total yards of total offense I thought Clemson was playing The Citadel and not one of the preseason contenders in the SEC. Clemson’s defense looked legit though so you have to give it to them.

USC handled business against Stanford and the score was a lot closer than the game at 14 points. The Trojans dominated on both sides of the ball and Sam Darnold keeps proving he is the real deal. Also, a little tip for Stanford….. STOP running tosses when your teams strength is up the gut and off tackle. USC is too fast for them and it showed. Stick to inside the hashes Stanford. And then there was my Irish. We gave it a valiant effort but in the end Georgia’s defense contained Winbush all game and our backers kept getting sucked in on off tackle plays which let Chubb and Michel run wild. Other than that it was a hard fought game and the defense showed signs of toughness and improvement overall.

Last but not least is that trash pile Rutgers. I think I am going to start a petition to have them kicked out of the Big Ten. They just lost to Eastern Michigan 13-16 which is worse than pathetic. Yes EMU isn’t the same embarrassment of a team they were years ago but come on. You are a “Big Ten” team. Play like it. Thats all I have. On to this weeks predictions…

Game Of The Week

3 Clemson (-3) vs 14 Louisville

This game being at Papa John’s stadium makes it real interesting and makes you wonder if Louisville is going to pull this one off. Lamar is electric but Clemson’s defense is stout and they were able to contain Lamar for most of the game last year. Yes Purdue is better it seems but UNC lost to Cal already this season so even though Louisville beat both it wasn’t convincingly. With that I am taking Clemson and the 3 points to win a close one by 4. I learned my lesson last week.

Top 25 Battle

24 Florida (-4) vs 23 Tennessee

It is a light week for Top 25 matchups but this rivalry is always one to watch.  Dormady isn’t the best QB but when compared to the crap Florida is trotting out he may look like the next coming of Peyton Manning compared to Franks and Zaire. That is a lot too coming from me because I was always a Zaire fan when he was at Notre Dame but his field awareness is just plain awful. That sack fumble in the end-zone against Michigan proved why he couldn’t beat out Franks. Still the Florida defense is stout and I don’t love Tennessee. Give me the Gators by default as McElwain is the better coach and it is in The Swamp.

Underrated Matchups

12 LSU (-7.5) vs Mississippi State

I am very interested in this game. LSU has looked good so far but they still have Danny Etling at QB. People keep saying he’s progressed but I am still skeptical. Coach O has this defense jacked up each week so we know they will show up.  Nick Fitgerald does enough to cover the spread but the Tigers come away with a close victory in Starkville. The LSU defense is just too good and Guice will break a big one at some point.

4 USC (-15.5) vs Texas

Tom Herman better cover his lips in chapstick because he is going to need to hand out a ton of those gross kisses out to his players before this game to get a win. This is a statement game for Herman after that embarrassment at home against Maryland. I see USC getting the win at home but Texas is competitive and only falls by 10 points. Darnold throws for over 400 though. Book it.

Cheer Cheer For Old Notre Dame

Notre Dame (-13) vs Boston College

If we don’t beat BC by at least 20 points I’ll be freakin pissed man. They have NO offense and we are much better offensively than their defense which is decent. If Brian Kelly wants to get reporters off his back this week he needs to make a statement against the Eagles. A 24 point win is a must which is what I have my Irish winning by. The schedule is manageable until we get to USC which I am not looking forward to. Until then lets rack up some wins boys.

Welcome to:

                    Below Average City

Where the grass is green but my picks ain’t pretty. Another 2-3 week in the books. Boise State covered for me although they totally blew that game when they were up 21 with 10 minutes left. I like Wazzu though so I didn’t mind the collapse. The Gamecocks handled business again and that Utah game was a lock so my teaser hit. Problem was I missed on all three big games last week which was pathetic. I have a good feeling about this week though. I think 4-1 is in my future.

                     Against The Spread

CLEMSON (-3) vs Louisville

Notre Dame (-13) vs Boston College

OKLAHOMA STATE (-11.5) vs Pitt

PURDUE (+7.5) vs Missouri

                      Teaser – 6 Points

TEXAS (+21.5/+15.5) vs USC

I don’t love the Clemson play but I think its the safe bet. I think Notre Dame and Okie State roll this week. Missouri just fired their DC so expect a shoot out in that one but I will take the Boilermakers. I don’t trust Mississippi State or Texas to cover but I like both with the extra points. Feels like a winner! Fingers crossed…..
