Grubbin Sports: College Football Week 4 Preview

Week 3 is in the books and it wasn’t pegged as a very interesting week but man it didn’t disappoint. Loaded with upsets and two barn burners it was an exciting Saturday to say the least. The FloridaTennessee game could literally have a blog to itself as it was a wild one. Tons of bad penalties and terrible coaching led to a 65 yard touchdown bomb from Franks to Cleveland for Florida to get the win in walk off fashion. My jaw literally hit the floor when I watched it happen.

Then at night we had a battle between USC and Texas that wasn’t pretty until the end of each half. It was 0-0 with about 2 minutes left and then just like that there were 21 points scored and 14 were off questionable play calls and bad execution by both teams. In the end it went to OT and a strip fumble down near the goal line lead to a walk on kicker hitting the game winner. Great game overall.

Now we move on to the disappointment. Lets start with Josh Rosen and UCLA who lost to Memphis on the road. It was a shootout indeed but Memphis made more plays and had less mistakes. Rosen committed the cardinal sin of quarterbacks by throwing late across the middle and it resulted in a pick 6. Sometimes being too cocky will cause you to do that. Back to the tub to regroup for this week.

Mike Riley ran out of the tunnel half dead and his team played just like him. Tanner Lee may be color blind because he can’t seem to tell who is on his team and all of the picks he has thrown proves that. The Huskers need to find some energy or Riley will be sent packing sooner rather than later.

In an even more surprising turn of events Stanford was knocked off by San Diego State. Stanford is showing how much they miss McCaffrey still and the lack of solid QB play is killing the running game. When you have no deep play ability teams just load the box all game.

The Notre Dame score looks good on the surface but they looked TERRIBLE in the first half against BC. Winbush cannot throw the ball which caused us to run for over 500 yards on the day. That philosophy will beat BC but USC will eat that up just like Georgia did. Still too many questions for my Irish after this one. Another disappointment was Coach O and the LSU Tigers. Nick Fitzgerald dug all up in that Tiger butt and proved LSU isn’t back yet offensively and as long as Etling is the QB they won’t be. It is time to move on from him. The Bulldogs look good though. Real good.

The showcase game of the weekend was Clemson versus Louisville and I think we learned some valuable information about both. Clemson showed they have one of the best defenses in the country yet again and the offense is progressing without Watson. We also learned that Lamar Jackson can’t beat good teams all by himself and he needs some help. Otherwise this team has 9-3 written all over them. Now off to this weeks games….

Game Of The Week???

#6 Oklahoma State (-13) vs #16 TCU

With College Gameday being in NYC this week there isn’t a clear cut GOTW so I am dubbing Okie State vs TCU the top dog. If you like defense don’t tune in but if you want to see the pigskin whipped all over the place this is the game for you. I like Oklahoma State in this one but I can’t figure out by how much. I think TCU covers but another slow start this week could be disastrous as the Pokes can get on you and fast.

Top 25 Battle

#11 Georgia (-5.5) vs #17 Mississippi State

Georgia looks “solid” but the lack of a playmaker at QB has me leaning toward Mississippi State in this one. I don’t want to take too much from the LSU game last week but I think it is a sign that the Bulldogs are for real. I think it is a close game but Miss State comes out on top by 4 points.

Underrated Matchups

Texas A&M (-2.5) vs Arkansas

This is a statement game for both of these teams. Sumlin is firmly on the hot seat and The Big Hog may not be on the hot seat necessarily but he needs as many wins as he can get. Getting slapped around by TCU the other week didn’t help his cause. As I have said many times A&M has the weapons and I think we see that this week. The Aggies by 7 against the Hogs. Confidence level = 0.

#12 Florida State (-13) vs NC State

This line has me scratching my head because FSU is starting a brand new QB and hasn’t played in weeks. A 4 point favorite I can see but 13 is absurd. It would make sense if Francois was still leading this team but not Blackman. He could be a stud but who knows and although I am not a NC State believer I see an easy cover here and a close win for FSU. Something tells me Vegas may be right on this one but I just can’t convince myself to take the points with the Noles.

Passing Game Where Art Thou

Notre Dame (-3.5) vs Michigan State

As always this game scares me. The Spartans always play us tough and beat us more often than not. Are we better? I think so. Does that matter? Hell no. The only thing that has me picking my Irish to win by a point is that the Michigan State offense has looked subpar against two non power 5 opponents. A loss here for Notre Dame and it is going to be a long season for Brian Kelly. I’m going to be sweating this one out all night.

Welcome to:

Your Bookie’s Worst Nightmare

Which were my picks last week as I went 5-0 and beat out my 4-1 prediction for the week. We all know what that means though and its a bad week coming. That’s just how gambling works my friends. I needed this coming off back to back 2-3 weeks to start the season but at 9-6 now I don’t look like a “total” idiot anymore. Off to the picks….

Against The Spread

UTAH (-3.5) vs Arizona

WEST VIRGINIA (-21) vs Kansas

MARYLAND (-3.5) vs UCF

TCU (+13) vs Oklahoma State

Teaser – 6 Points

NC STATE (+19/+13) vs Florida State

MISSISSIPPI STATE (+11.5/+5.5) vs Georgia

Obviously I am riding high off of last week and I think most of these plays are locks but the reality is 2-3 is probably where I will be again. The Oklahoma State games scares me because it could be a blowout and I teased the NC State game because of that weird line and Miss State could be primed for a letdown after a big win. Only time will tell. Good luck this week.
