Grubbin Sports : College Football Week 7 Preview

Well for a week with no top 25 matchups there was a whole lot of drama. 4 top 10 teams fell to unranked opponents which caused a third of the undefeated field to join the one loss club.

Freaky Friday gave us Syracuse knocking off Clemson in the Carrier Dome and Kelly Bryant out of the game. With NC State coming up soon they need him back healthy. Then the nightcap had Cal beat the brakes off of Washington State 37-3 and further prove that anytime you go on the road a big upset can happen.

Saturdays slate had 3 games that had great finishes. Oklahoma and Texas was a back and forth brawl that ended with Baker Mayfield hitting his tight end Andrews to go up for good. Then you had Georgia Tech pulling the upset against Miami until a 4th down tipped pass ended in Miami extending the drive and kicking a short field goal for the win to keep them unbeaten. Then the game between USC and Utah was a doozy. Utah had a 21-7 lead which they squandered late but had a chance at the very end. They scored and went for 2 for the win and came up short. Williams didn’t see Carrington in the back of the end zone which would have put a nail in their playoff hopes.

Then there was the SEC. A&M held off the Gators saving Sumlin’s job for another week. Auburn blew a 20 point lead against LSU which gave Coach O a big win and might have put Gus Mahlzan right back on the hot seat. With games against A&M, Georgia and Bama left he needs to win at least two of those to be safe. That leaves us with the champions of life, the Tennessee Vols lead by Butch Jones. They failed to score a touchdown again and dropped to South Carolina. They are 36 points dogs to Alabama this weekend and Butch Jones house will be up for sale Sunday morning.

That brings us to the last two games I want to review and each for a different reason. The first was Washington who had their playoff dreams shattered against Arizona State Saturday night. There is still a chance they can get in if they win out but this loss hurts because ASU is mediocre and the Huskies don’t have a non conference win to hang their hat on. They will need a Notre Dame loss and most likely a 2 loss Big 12 champ.

The last game is the Ohio State-Nebraska contest. For the second straight year the Huskers got their ass kicked and have further proven they need new leadership at the top. Everyone is saying Scott Frost is the perfect fit but if your Scott Frost do you even want to return to your alma mater? There will be at least 5 better jobs out there by years end and he is one of the hottest candidates in the country. If I am him I say thanks but no thanks Nebraska. Frost should be SEC bound for sure. Off to this weeks preview.

Game Of The Week

#2 Penn State (-9.5) vs #19 Michigan

Now I would have put ND-USC here but since College Gameday is in Happy Valley we will roll with it. Without Wilton Speight at QB I just can’t see Michigan moving the ball on Penn States defense effectively. I also don’t see a blowout necessarily as Michigan’s defense is stout and Penn State’s offense has only really been tested once against Iowa and we see how that almost turned out. Penn State covers but barely.

Intriguing Matchups

#10 Oklahoma State (-7) vs Texas

I can’t wait to watch this game. Texas has been so close too many times this year under Herman and they are bound to upset a big time team soon and this may be the week. The Pokes will be a tough test and I am calling the upset as the Longhorns take down the Mullet and end their playoff dreams. Its close but Texas by 3 points late.

#15 Washington State (-9.5) vs Colorado

The ‘Cougs either win by 20 against the Buffs or get beat by 20 this weekend. They are either going to respond to the shellacking in a positive way and get back to the team they looked like halfway through the season or they fall into a deep hole and 7-5 is their end destination. I see all positive and a big win by Leach and his boys.

    Battle For The Jeweled Shillelagh

#13 Notre Dame (-3.5) vs #11 USC
If you asked me to call this game a month ago I would have told you Notre Dame doesn’t have a chance. But coming off a bye week and with USC struggling week in and week out I like my Irish’s chances Saturday night. Call me optimistic but we hold on late by 3 points as USC cannot stop the duo of Wimbush and Adams as we rack up over 350 on the ground and force Darnold into 2 picks with one being on the last drive to secure the victory. Go Irish!!!

A .500 Way Of Life

Being average isn’t good but I guess its not bad either. At 17-17-1 I can’t say I’m disappointed at this point in the year but something has to give soon. 3-2 last week got us back to even so here goes nothing.

Against The Spread

PURDUE (-9.5) vs Rutgers

WASHINGTON ST (-9.5) vs Colorado

WEST VIRGINIA (-9) vs Baylor

SYRACUSE (+17) vs Miam

Teaser – 6 Points
LSU (-1/-7) vs Ole Miss

LOUISVILLE (+13/+7) vs Florida State

Well 9 seems to be my number this week and we will find out Saturday night whether it was lucky or not. I don’t love any of these games but I don’t hate any either. Smells like 2-3 this week though…..
