Grubbin Sports: College Football Week 8 Preview

Two big games last week and two big blowouts. However, with those blowouts we learned a lot about all of the teams involved. Penn State finally had to play a tough opponent in Michigan and didn’t disappoint. Michigan showed that without a viable option at QB it doesn’t matter how good your defense is. Then my Irish came out and lambasted USC and did it early. They made Sam Darnold think about coming back to school next year because his sophomore campaign has been a nightmare so far. Notre Dame is officially for real and they have an even bigger test this week to further prove it.

The noon window had some good suspense as Louisville and Florida State came down to a late turnover by Blackman leading to a field goal to win it for the ‘Cards. A big bounce back win for them. Then there was the Oklahoma StateTexas game which was a low scoring affair ending in the worst pass these eyes have ever seen. For some reason on 3rd and 4 freshman Sam Ehlinger lobbed a ball into the end-zone instead of throwing it away and literally shocked everyone who was watching. I still can’t believe what I saw…

Bama did what Bama does and that was slap Butch Jones and the Vols right in the mouth. The Vols streak of terrible offense continued and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

Two somewhat bigger surprises for me were Oklahoma squeaking by Kansas State on a last second touchdown which I didn’t see coming but you can never rule out a Bill Snyder coached team. The other surprise was Rutgers taking down Purdue. As good as Purdue has looked this season this game showed that they still don’t have a ton of great talent on the roster. I also may have to rethink booting Rutgers out of the Big Ten….but I won’t. I still need to see more from the Scarlet Knights. Off to this week’s slate of games.

             Game Of The Week
#6 Ohio State (-7) vs #2 Penn State

When I saw this line early in the week I was flabbergasted that Penn State was a touchdown dog. I know they are on the road in the Shoe but come on Ohio State doesn’t have a statement win yet and has been putting up big numbers against a bunch of garbage. Not going to lie I want to see the Buckeyes win purely because I am tired of James Franklin and all of his stupid cliches. Buckeyes by 3 and that call is purely out of spite.

   Top 25 Battles

#9 Notre Dame (-7) vs #14 NC State

Allllllll aboard the Dame Train!!!!! Last call to hop on to this fine machine that finally got the statement win we needed against USC when we handled business and handled it early. This week is a different story as NC State is stout upfront and will really prove whether this Irish ground game can compete with the big boys. They failed against Georgia but that was week 2 and this team is brimming with confidence since then. To be honest this is really a statement game for both teams as NC State needs to live up to all of the pre season hype. Irish by 3 and they get it late. Should be a great game.

#11 Oklahoma State (-7) vs #22 West Virginia

I literally cannot predict what West Virginia is going to do on a weekly basis and its pissing me off. I have the Pokes beating them by 10 this week which means they probably win by 3. That’s just been how this year has been going for them. This one is a shootout though for most of the game as the Pokes fix their offensive woes from last week. 4 TD’s on the day from Mason Rudolph.

#4 TCU (-6.5) vs #25 Iowa State

Look at the Cyclones doing work. Honestly they would be ranked higher if they didn’t blow the Iowa game early in the season. Matt Campbell just keeps proving every week how good of a coach he is and to have Iowa State in the Top 25 is coach of the year worthy. I don’t see them lasting though and TCU wins by 13 but it is a game until the 4th quarter when TCU pulls away with it.

    Game To Watch

#7 Clemson (-14) vs Georgia Tech

This one is very interesting to me. Kelly Bryant is back from a concussion and ankle injury which means Tech’s chances of an upset went down significantly. Also, coming off of the Syracuse loss means this is no longer a triple option trap game for the Tigers. I like GT but I see Clemson coming out focused and beating Tech by 20. If they had beaten Cuse in their last game then this has trap game all over it but with that variable Clemson is no longer sleeping on anyone.

A REAL Tough Week For Picks

I looked at this weeks slate and said this is going to be purely a guessing game. Maybe only one line I truly liked but as a degenerate gambler one game is not enough. Time to take a few risks and let em fly. Back to a game over .500 so here are this weeks gems.

   Against The Spread
PENN STATE (+7) vs Ohio State
OKLAHOMA STATE (-7) vs West Virginia
TEXAS A&M (+2.5) vs Mississippi State
TEXAS TECH (+20.5) vs Oklahoma

  Teaser – 6 Points
