Grubbin Sports: College Football Week 12 Preview

Friday night started with a bang as the Huskies were manhandled by Stanford which “unofficially” knocked the Pac 12 out of playoff contention. Washington was actually impressive early in the game but that didn’t last long as Stanford started taking control in the 2nd quarter and never looked back.

The noon slate involved Oklahoma State and Iowa State who had a shootout working in Ames Iowa. The Cyclones controlled most of the game but having to dip into their 4th string quarterback proved detrimental and the Pokes just kept fighting back offensively taking the 7 point win. This game didn’t disappoint though as it came down to a controversial interception call in the end zone with the result going the Pokes way. They stay alive in the Big 12 championship race as a result. While all this was going on Ohio State was dragging Sparty all over the playground like a rag doll exposing their mediocre offense and overrated defense.

Wisconsin put Iowa back in their place as they held the Hawkeyes to 66 yards of total offense which was only 11 more than points they scored against Ohio State the week before. I still don’t understand that one. Clemson took care of Florida State but the final score was very deceiving as it was a 3 point game until about 6 minutes left when FSU gave it away. The big surprise was the Auburn-Georgia game. I wouldn’t say that it was a surprise to everyone that they won but I don’t think anyone saw them winning the way they did which was complete domination. Stidham and Johnson are proving to be a lethal one-two punch and the Tigers have a chance to cause madness in 2 weeks against Alabama. Can’t wait for that one.

The night slate left a lot to be desired and did not live up to the hype except for the Bama-Miss St game which was a barn burner until the end. For some reason Mississippi State thought it was a good idea to send the house on back to back plays which resulted in the game winning touchdown. Like I get you don’t want to play soft and stay aggressive but there’s a healthy medium guys. The Oklahoma-TCU game was a dud as the vaunted Horned Frogs defense was exposed by Baker Mayfield as he basically locked down the Heisman trophy. Lastly there was the Notre Dame-Miami game where the turnover chain was out ALL night because my Irish sucked ass. The Canes exposed our lack of a passing game which was bound to happen sooner or later and watching Wimbush attempt to throw the ball is agonizing. I knew the dream of a playoff birth was too good to be true. Better luck next year Notre Dame.

Off to this weeks Blah lineup of games.

Game Of The Week

5 Wisconsin (-7.5) vs 24 Michigan

Now this game intrigues me for sure. Michigan has looked good ever since they benched O’Korn for Peters and the running game has been lethal. The problem is they haven’t beat a team with a winning record yet. Same kinda goes for Wisconsin who romped Iowa last week but before that the schedule was super soft. My heart is with Michigan but my mind says Wisconsin by 10.

Intriguing Matchups

West Virginia (-3) vs Texas

Can Tom Herman get a statement win this year? This is his chance against the Mountaineers which aren’t ranked but they are still a good squad. The Texas defense forces Will Grier into too many bad decisions and gets it done. Horns by a field goal. Hook em’.

11 USC (-16) vs UCLA

It’s Darnold vs Rosen who are both highly touted underachievers this year. Darnold has been a turnover machine this season and Rosen just doesn’t have enough weapons at his disposal to make a stir. Still he doesn’t seem to have the killer instinct to go along with his great arm. This will be a good test for him but the Trojans roll by 21 against the Bruins.

So Long Playoff Hopes

8 Notre Dame (-17.5) vs Navy

Ugh this game scares me as Navy always plays us tough and this week will be no different. The possessions will be limited for the Irish as Navy will churn out a couple 8+ minute drives. The Irish win by a touchdown but it won’t be pretty. Kelly needs this win to avoid a disastrous end to the season.

Another Loser Folks

2-3 just seems to be my life the last few weeks. Maybe we will get back on the winning train this week but at this point it’s unlikely. Maybe take the opposite of my picks. That sounds like a dynamite strategy right now.
