Grubbin Sports: College Football Championship Week Preview

Rivalry week didn’t disappoint as it created the ability to have some good ole fashioned chaos this week which everyone loves deep down inside. Ohio State came back to beat Michigan with their backup QB Haskins. Luckily for the Buckeyes John O’Korn was letting Ohio States secondary play Duck Hunt in the second half which sealed their victory.

Auburn controlled Alabama from start to finish further proving they are the team to beat right now. Alabama now needs some things to fall their way to climb back into the playoff picture.

Washington whipped Wazzu yet again in the Apple Cup and showed they are still king of the state. Then Stanford handled my Irish taking Brian Kelly from coach of the year candidate to a guy who can’t beat the big boys yet again. It was a fun ride while it lasted this year I guess.

Georgia handled Georgia Tech and is giving us a win and you’re in matchup in the SEC Championship game. Miami decided not to show up offensively against Pitt and literally benched Rosier for Shirreff’s who hadn’t played more than garbage time all year. Talk about desperation at its finest. The ACC Championship game is still a winner is in but it could have been an epic #1 vs #2 matchup which would have been sweet.

Now lets take a look at maybe the greatest slate of championship games we have ever seen. The worst team is ranked #12 which means almost every game matters (USC needs some help).

Pac 12 Championship Game

#10 USC (-4) vs #12 Stanford

The first of three rematches kicks off Friday night between the Cardinal and Trojans. The first meeting was an 18 point drubbing by the Trojans early in the season. However, this Stanford team is not the same one that was there that day. Bryce Love is still Bryce Love but with Costello at QB the Cardinal have looked like they usually do which is tough to beat. I have Stanford taking this one by a field goal.

Big 12 Championship Game

#3 Oklahoma (-7) vs #11 TCU

Rematch #2 here and the first one was a lopsided affair as Oklahoma came out swinging and exposed TCU’s alleged top 10 defense. I don’t see this one being out of control early again but Baker Mayfield has not been stopped all season even in their only loss. The Sooners cover the 7 and win by 10 points. Gary Patterson’s defense will play better but Kenny Hill has a hard time getting it going. Sooners are playoff bound.

SEC Championship Game

#2 Auburn (-2) vs #6 Georgia

I can’t wait to see round 2 here and this time the game will be a bloodbath. Auburn is beat up offensively but their defense is not which is what one the first matchup stopping Georgia’s prolific running attack. Auburn will keep the same strategy and make the true freshman Fromm try and beat them through the air again. I think he is a little more successful this week but Auburn wins the rematch by 4 points and holds off a late Georgia run.

ACC Championship Game

#1 Clemson (-9) vs #7 Miami

To me this will be the biggest mismatch of the weekend. Miami has just been squeaking by bad teams all season (with the exception of Notre Dame which is debatable) and Pitt finally caught them with their pants down. They looked inept offensively which Clemson continues this weekend. I think Miami’s defense keeps them in it but a 24-7 outcome is how I see it playing out.

Big Ten Championship Game

#8 Ohio State (-6.5) vs #4 Wisconsin

At 11:59AM last Saturday I had Ohio State as a lock to beat Wisconsin but the more I watched the Buckeyes struggle against an offensively challenged Michigan team I immediately changed my pick. The only problem with the Badgers is that their offense always seems to start slow and pick up steam in the second half. Their stout defense provides them this luxury and with a gimpy JT Barrett I see them feasting on him all day. I have the Badgers by a touchdown and I could see this turning into a possible route late. Put the Badgers into the playoff ladies and gents.

Welcome to:

Winning Week & Some Big Games

I am going to pick all of the Power 5 Championship games straight up and see what I can whiff on to cap the regular season. Right now I am sitting at 31-33-1 on the season which isn’t great but it’s not atrocious. 4-1 this weekend can help me save face but anything less and its a losing season…..well at least until I make some bad bowl picks!

Against The Spread

STANFORD (+4) vs USC

OKLAHOMA (-7) vs TCU

AUBURN (-2) vs Georgia

CLEMSON (-9) vs Miami

WISCONSIN (+6.5) vs Ohio State

The more picks I get wrong this week the more chaos there will be. Strap in folks it feels like a wild one this weekend.
