Grubbin Sports: Army-Navy & Heisman Preview

Army-Navy

In a game where the over/under on total passes thrown is usually around 5 it is always a treat to see two teams who run the triple option best face off. Also, factor in the all of the nostalgia and military presence and it is just a great atmosphere overall. I’ve personally always been a big Air Force fan dating back to the Fisher DeBerry days when Beau Morgan was tearing up teams running the option in the 90’s but you can’t beat this matchup.

Navy comes in as 3 point favorites at 6-5 trying to right the wrong from last year when Army broke Navy’s 14 year winning streak. Lead by Abey at QB he has racked up 1,322 yards and 14 TD’s this season and has carried more of the load than Bradshaw from Army. Bradshaw has been more of a big play guy averaging 7.8 yards per carry and has 1,472 yards with 11 TD’s. Neither team has eclipsed over 100 pass attempts on the season which is amazing and a combined 36 guys have toted the rock between the two teams. I still don’t understand how this game ever takes over 2 hours to play since both these teams just pound the ball for four quarters.

At the end of the day I like Army to move their streak to two straight with a 6 point win. Should be a great one to watch.

Heisman Preview

To say that this Heisman ceremony will be full of suspense would be a lie. Baker Mayfield has been running away with it for about 4 or 5 weeks now. Once James Franklin decided not to give Saquon Barkley the ball in their two most important games it was a wrap. I still don’t understand why people aren’t talking about that anymore. Other than a controversial crotch grab against Kansas Baker has been nearly flawless. That being said below are the stats and my argument for each player heading to NYC.

Baker Mayfield – QB – Oklahoma (12-1)

Key Stats: 4,340 Pass Yards, 41 TD’s, 5 INT’s, 310 Rush Yards, 5 TD’s

Baker is getting all the love now and it is deserved. When the lights are brightest this guy never disappoints which cannot always be said when it comes to some of the top players in the country. At this point he is running away with the Heisman and the only suspense will be how many of the first place votes he gets. The leader in the clubhouse is the 2006 winner Troy Smith from Ohio State with 91.6% of the first place votes. I think Baker will get close but won’t eclipse that mark with Bryce Love stealing some west coast votes.

Bryce Love – RB – Stanford (9-4)

Key Stats: 1,973 Rush Yards, 17 TD’s, 8.7 YPC

Bryce Love started out red hot but slowed down the stretch due to a nagging ankle injury which had him playing around 70% the second half of the season. Still just under 2K rushing is very impressive and without him this Stanford team would not have made it to the Pac 12 Championship game. Bryce should be a shoe in for second place Saturday night but will be well behind Baker in the final vote count.

Lamar Jackson – QB – Louisville (8-4)

Key Stats: 3,489 Pass Yards, 25 TD’s, 6 INT’s, 1,443 Rush Yards, 17 TD’s

I want to start by saying I LOVE watching Lamar Jackson play. He is the most electrifying player since Michael Vick and at some points you could argue he made more spectacular plays at the college level. That being said he didn’t produce in his biggest games. I don’t think the 4 losses hurt as much as that did in my opinion. That was also similar to last year but he was so electrifying early in the season and put up such monster numbers people overlooked it. However after a sub par Clemson performance and falling to 6-4 it made it hard for him to be able to repeat. Add in the fact that Baker has been playing on big stages and Lamar just doesn’t have a shot. Still it is impressive that he was able to get back this year. Kudos to him for that.

Welcome to:

A Dominate Championship Week.

I said I needed a 4-1 week and I got it. Felt good to finally get above .500 with a 35-34-1 record for the year. It was a struggle folks but sometimes you just have to grind. I am still going to pick the Army-Navy game as well as the 3 playoff games and maybe some of the major bowls. Not gonna lie I kind of want to hang it up right now since I am above .500 but the true degenerate in me will not allow that. So the pick for this weekend is Army +3 against Navy. Enjoy the game. Should be a great one.
