forbes.com – Donald Glover’s much-lauded Atlanta series returns to FX tonight for its second season premiere. Named “Robbin’ Season,” the title seems a bit ominous but Glover says the stories he is now telling are designed to keep old viewers and draw new ones. Meanwhile, on the eve of the premiere, he surprised a young fan on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert by buying 113 boxes of Girl Scout cookies from the little Atlanta girl who created a now-viral cookie sales songto the tune of Glover’s “Redbone.” (The child came on stage with her dad and a cookie form. After saying he likes Thin Mints, Glover went ahead and bought all the boxes to help the girl attain her sales goal.)
In the interview with Colbert, Glover said that celebrity can be odd and awkward at times, with people expecting you to be the same person you are on television or in a video when all you want to do is check out with your groceries at Whole Foods.
Glover told Colbert:
You’re in the video and you’ve got champagne and butts close to your face. And then you have to go to Whole Foods. And they’re like ‘you’re that dude,’ and you’re like, ‘please, I just want to buy this ice cream.’
As far as Atlanta, Glover, who is a member of FORBES’ 30 Under 30 class of 2012, described the show as more like Curb Your Enthusiasm for rappers. He also told Variety, in a separate interview, that he intends to surprise the audience with new storylines. “I don’t want to go into Season Two [with the mindset of] ‘Enough people liked it so just keep those people,’ because then you begin to give your audience a methadone drip of bullshit that keeps them happy as opposed to, ‘We did something controversial and more people were interested.'”
