columbiamissourian.com – Thirteen-year-old Gentry Duncan stood next to the auctioneer and proudly held his award-winning ham high in the air.
He’d been preparing for this moment since last summer when he started raising the pig that would eventually become the Boone County Fair’s grand-champion ham.
Gentry won first place at the county fair’s annual ham judgingon Monday, and his ham was the first to be auctioned off Saturday morning at the annual Boone County Country Ham Breakfast.
Gentry’s ham scored 83 out of a possible 100 points at the ham judging, and it was expected to bring in big numbers at the auction. The price started at $500, and quickly grew as bids came from all corners of the room. Gentry’s smile grew wider as the bids got bigger.
His ham eventually sold for $1,000.
I gotta get into the competitive ham game, I didn’t know it was going down like this…that much be some extremely delicious pork for that price.
