forbes.com – Chipotle Mexican Grill (NYSE: CMG) is hoping that bacon burritos and customized nachos will be part of a winning strategy to come back from its 2015 food-borne illness outbreak scandal as it tests the new menu offerings in select cities.
Starting in September, the burrito giant will introduce applewood smoked bacon to its offerings at eight locations in Orange County, Calif. Also on the horizon, according to a news release issued Thursday, are plans to expand a test run of its “build your own” nachos to all Denver and Minneapolis-St. Paul locations beginning in October, following a successful 10-restaurant pilot.
“Consumers have always said ‘everything tastes better with bacon’ and that is exactly what we confirmed in our New York test kitchen,” said Chris Brandt, chief marketing officer at Chipotle, in the news release. “We found consumers added bacon to their traditional bowls, burritos, tacos and nachos while also enjoying new items such as the BLT quesadilla with bacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese grilled to perfection.”
Quesadillas are currently only available in the test kitchen.
Elsewhere, the chain has unveiled a number of deals reminiscent to night-owl favorite Taco Bell, which CEO Brian Niccol previously headed until he took the helm at Chipotle in February. Since the move, he’s been tasked with driving the brand’s strategy and performance of more than 2,400 restaurants in North America and Europe.
At participating locations in Miami and Dallas, customers can get $2 tacos with the purchase of a drink after 8 p.m. at participating locations in Miami and Dallas. To accommodate the late-night crowd, these stores will also stay open until 11 p.m.
You already know how I feel about bacon as a member of the illustrious Pork Sweat Boys…it can go with everything…but i’m not sure if even the all mighty candy of the meats can combat e coli.
