Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting this story but hey who’s going to turn down a story of passion, sex, cat fighting and jealousy! Don’t forget rage!! Well all dealing with the QUEEN and her two MEAN GIRLS! The Favourite is an epic wicked and fictionalized account of what might have taken place between Queen Anne of England, her friend and confidante Lady Sarah, and a maid with aspirations named Abigail, as Sarah and Abigail “vied” for the Queen’s “favor”…. hence the air quotes! Lol
From the great mind of Director Yorgos Lanthimos, whose last two films, “The Lobster” and “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” (GREAT MOVIES) were executed by his determination to make his audience uneasy and queasy, goes just a tad easier on us with this one. If you enjoy his production, don’t worry — the film has his fingerprints all over it. But to where those two films mentioned were so weird as to pull me out of the narrative, “The Favourite” is more on the realm of the likes of “Dogtooth,” the craziness that introduced me to This psychotic genius in the first place, his weirdness is hypnotic and kept me on the edge of my seat waiting to see where this whacky ass movie was going to go next. And unlike “The Lobster,” which apparently was supposed to be a comedy, “The Favourite” actually made me laugh and laugh a ton!
Upon stellar, the acting was incredible! With Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone all giving believable and witty crackerjack performances. This movie shows the lengths to which some people will allow themselves to go in order to yield power over one another. Though all three ladies get plenty of opportunities to shine, the film feels more “about” Abigail than anyone, and we watch her first wrestle with her morals as she realizes how skeezy she will have to be to beat Lady Sarah at her game, then commit to doing what she has to do to be top dog, and finally left wondering why she wanted to be top dog in the first place, with warning given to her by rival Lady Sarah that she refuses to heed! SO PRETTY MUCH MEAN GIRLS BEFORE MEAN GIRLS! Olivia Colman’s Queen Anne is a wolf in sheep’s clothing, her physical and emotional frailty becomes a camouflage for her huge obsession with being adored.
I’m loving 2019 so far it’s unloving a door to what could be a great movie year. 4.8 good charbroiled impossible vegan burgers with some homemade cut potato fries and fresh toppings mmmmm … “The Favourite” looks and feels stunning, the kind of film that wins Oscars for production design, costume design, and cinematography but actually deserves them. This movie is not afraid to get its hands dirty and the girls either! A must see.. Come back to me THE MOVIE MAN and let me know your thoughts.
